Only 4,949 Miles On The Bike This Year

Wonderful thoughts again in this post.
“”Some cyclists ignore their families just to rack up the miles. If you are one of those people let me kindly inform you that you are an idiot. Your children are only young once—so spend as much time with them as you can. It doesn’t take any extra time to eat healthy food, nor does it take all that many miles on a bike to keep your circulatory system in great shape. When your children are big enough you can have them join you for a ride.”

All Seasons Cyclist

This year did not turn out like I had planned—I ended up cycling only 4,949 miles this year and that makes it the worst mileage year I’ve had in a while. It also drops my yearly average down to just 6,075 miles per year.

We had fairly mild weather in January so I was able to get a good head start on my miles for the year. However, during the second week of February I got the flu (a genuine case of influenza, not just a common cold) and it took me off my bike for three weeks. When I finally got back to riding I was a bit slower than normal, but I worked my way back up to normal speed and distance rather quickly.

On March 28 I went out for a Metric Century ride on a beautiful day—light winds, full sun, a foot of snow on…

“Squats Are Safe, But You’re Probably Doing Them Wrong”

Another great article by Mark Rippetoe on squatting.

“One of the most persistent myths in the entire panoply of conventional exercise wisdom is that squats below parallel are somehow bad for the knees. This old saw is mindlessly repeated by poorly-informed orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, and chiropractors all over the world. Better-informed professionals such as productive strength coaches, weightlifters and powerlifters, and those willing to examine the anatomy of the knees and hips for more than just a minute or two, know better.”

2 mountain bike rides in one report

First ride from December 15th was somewhat cold one.
Started around 7AM and it was around – 2 C,foggy and damp.

This is how it looks in the early morning at 7AM, the road to off road :). No traffic, just the depressive fog.

Still some frost on the trees and branches.

Leftovers from the recent strong winds that hit our city.Hope they will clean this soon (in a year or two :))

The trail is empty! This is one of the beauties of early ride.

Finally, sunny and much warmer.

Very often i stop by at this place to renew my water. It’s great water and cold as ice 🙂

The city is surrounded with fog and clouds. Here at some 800m above the sea level, it all looks much better.

This place should be full of snow, but since it was +8 C – no  skiing! 😀

Some impressions from the second ride from December 22nd.

Although the weather was not so good for any riding-in the city it was foggy, drizzly and i usually don’t have any inspiration for a ride.

I rather stay at home with the wife and kids, but not to lose the weekend of riding, managed to convince myself to prepare the bike and equipment the night before and decided i would start as early as possible on sunday.

So after waking up at 5:30AM, eating the bowl full of oats and some fine muesli mixed together with a whole fat milk i waas almost ready to go.
Put on the usual winter cycling clothes, checked i had everything needed in my backpack. Strong LED headlight on my head, battery full :).
After some 30 minutes through the city, finally got to the start of the trail and the fog was almost gone.
It was already starting to dawn, clear blue sky, the city in the clouds….peace and quiet all around. Just a few hikers along the first part of the trail.
Later i got on to the trail that is very rarely used, but rideable and sometimes walkable :D.

Here are some photographs from this ride.

Bicycle commuting all year long

Been doing this for the last 7 years. Sold the car and don’t have any intention of getting any car in the near future.

If this ain’t crazy…..”Dad Arrested For Picking Up Kids At School By Foot”

“But how much more enslaved by car culture will our society become before we start heading down a more rational, logical path, creating more healthy, liveable places to work, live and play.”

Fallen trees on the trail

Today started the mountain bike ride at 7 AM, some -1 C outside, sunny.

2 or 3 weeks ago there were strong winds in my area and lot of trees were ripped on my mountain where i always ride.

Here are some parts of the trail that are usually rideable.

Stubborn as i am, i jumped over the first few fallen trees and decided i am not coming back.

Just wanted to get to the first part of the trail where i could get out on the road.

Image

It’ll take some time until they clear all these fallen trees.

No hikers this morning, usually and on this weather this trail is packed with hikers, but obviously people don’t want to take any risk :).

It was quite funny jumping over the trees, raising the bicycle over them.

Bicycle posing 😀

Finally, this part of the trail was clear from the trees.

Some ice leftovers!

Place to rest before going home for a cup of black tea! 😀
